Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition Winners Announced

American cellist Mathew Allen took first place on September 1 in the seventh Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition, held in Morelia, Mexico. The triennial competition is named for the famous Mexican cellist, writer, and champion of Latin American composers.

In addition to winning a $10,000 award, Allen, a graduate of the Cleveland Conservatory, will record a CD (with the program being chosen by the judges), solo at a performance with the National Symphony Orchestra of Mexico, and participate in the Miguel Bernal Jiménez international music festival.

Two winners were announced for second place: Georgi Anichenko of Belarus and Arnold Choi of Canada. Third place was not awarded. Venezuelan José Emmanuel Acurero received the special prize for promising young talent and one contestant, Mingyao Zhao of China, was awarded a full scholarship to Texas Christian University, where the cellist will study under Jesús Castro-Balbi,who also served as one of the contest’s judges.

The next competition is planned for 2015.
