Kaplan Cello Strings

When D’Addario’s string designer Fan Tao set out to create a new set of cello strings, he wanted it all: a rich, warm sound from a string that a cellist could really dig into. “I got about 80 percent of my ideal,” Tao says. The resulting Kaplan cello strings are more flexible than D’Addario’s other offerings, with a rich, complex sound. They are stretchy despite their steel cores, and as a result, Tao says, the playing technique is more like gut. The strings will withstand plenty of sustained bow pressure for maximum volume, but you don’t want to “whack the heck out of them,” as Tao says. Think Schumann rather than Shostakovich.

  • Titanium-wound A, nickel-wound D strings

  • Stranded steel-core/tungsten-wound G and C strings

  • Light, medium, and heavy gauges

  • 4/4 size = playing length of 27 1/2 inches (700 mm)

  • Medium set, $326 (MSRP), $212 (Street); other gauges sold individually
