CD Review: The Florestan Trio—Shostakovich

Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok, Op. 127

The Florestan Trio—violinist Anthony Marwood, cellist Richard Lester, and pianist Susan Tomes—has announced its impending break-up. That parting is tinged with sorrow, now that the U.K. trio has added this scintillating disc of Shostakovich trios to its discography. The strikingly beautiful Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok, Op. 127, commissioned for cellist Mstislav Rostropovich’s soprano wife (and with Susan Gritton here), is sandwiched between highly emotive readings of Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Poeme, Op. 8, and Piano trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67. To paraphrase Humphrey Bogart, we’ll always have Shostakovich.
