Learn a Fresh Spin on the Fiddle Fave ‘Sally Ann’

This Round Peak–style version is energetic and just right for fiddle contests

The Round Peak version of “Sally Ann” differs from common versions of the tune, reflecting the historical elements that make the Round Peak style unique. “There was a lot of music here in Round Peak because it was so isolated,” says McMillian, noting that the driving intensity of bowing and melodic accompaniment distinguish the style from others as close as Galax. The Round Peak legacy includes such historic players as McMillian’s grandfather, Fred Cockerham, Kyle Creed, and Tommy Jarrell, who grew up next door to the Freeman farm.
