Chopin, with his unsurpassed melodic gifts, was naturally drawn to the cello. He wrote two short works for it before embarking on one of his grandest compositions, and the only one of his mature masterpieces that isn’t for solo piano: the Cello Sonata, Op. 65. He recognized its importance, as it was the last work to which he assigned an opus number.
