Slava in Statuary
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin applauds during a March 29 ceremony of dedication of the monument to the well-known Russian cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, who died in 2007. The bronze-and-granite statue of the man known simply as Slava (a reference to the status of patron saint in the Russian Orthodox faith) is at the intersection of Bryusov Pereulok and Yeliseyevsky Pereulok in central Moscow, close to where Rostropovich lived with his wife, Galina Vishnevskaya.
