NEA, JJA Jazz Awards Announced
Charlie Haden, Christian McBride, Billy Bang among recipients
Bassist, composer, and educator Charlie Haden has been named a 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master. Haden’s career and contributions to the genre—including spearheading the Jazz Studies program at the California Institute of the Arts in 1982—will be celebrated at a Jazz at Lincoln Center concert in January. Haden will also receive $25,000. In other jazz-related news, the Jazz Journalists Association held its 15th annual award ceremony June 11 in New York. Bassist of the Year was awarded to Christian McBride and Violinist of the Year was awarded to the late Billy Bang. arts.gov/honors/jazz/jmCMS/master.php?id=2012_03&type=bio; news.jazzjournalists.org
