Lambert Chen Wins 'Stanley Cup of Classical Music'

Prize is a full-size, gold-plated violin trophy and a $20,000 scholarship

When violist Lambert Chen took the stage at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada, in January, it wasn't for a game-winning slap shot. Montreal's McGill University awarded the 27-year-old doctoral student what it has billed the "Stanley Cup of Classical Music," a full-size, gold-plated violin trophy and a $20,000 scholarship. McGill bestows the honor to a talented string player who is close to finishing his or her studies at the university, and the trophy is kept at the Marvin Duchow Music Library. Mining tycoon Seymour Schulich found the trophy during a trip in Dubai and donated it and the scholarship to McGill, his alma mater.
