Cellists Brofsky & Finckel Joining Juilliard Faculty

Joining the music-studio faculty this fall

Brofsky

Last week, the Juilliard School announced several new appointments to its music studio faculty. Beginning in the fall, cellists Natasha Brofsky and David Finckel (a Juilliard alumnus) join the music studio faculty.

These two new members will also join violinist Ida Kavafian, whose appointment was announced earlier, in the chamber music faculty. Finckel studied with Elsa Hilger,Bernard Greenhouse, and Mstislav Rostropovich. He appears in more than 100 concerts each season in recital with pianist Wu Han (with whom he was named Musical America’s 2012 Musicians of the Year) and as cellist of the Grammy-winning Emerson String Quartet.

Along with Han, he is also the founder and artistic director of Music@Menlo, an acclaimed chamber music festival and institute in Silicon Valley that has garnered international acclaim.

Brofsky has enjoyed a career as a musician and teacher. As cellist of the Peabody Trio, she has performed in chamber music series throughout the United States, Canada, and the UK, and held principal positions in the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

As a teacher, she has given master classes at the San Francisco Conservatory, Peabody Conservatory, and Boston University, as well as for El Sistema in Venezuela. Brofsky joined the New England Conservatory’s cello faculty in 2004, and she will retain this position.
