Well, make sure you clear out a section for the following musicians, because not only is their playing incredible, they’re sure to be names you’ll hear again and again. These 15 players—from a wide range of stylistic disciplines and listed in alphabetical order—are rising stars of the string world. All have the passion and talent to make their way to the top. These featured players were recommended by established performers and string faculty, several are winners of the Borletti Buitoni Trust Award, and others are included on the roster of Anne-Sophie Mutter’s Circle of Friends Foundation.

On Surmounting Obstacles:
“When I was 15 years old, there was a fire on my parents’ farm in Italy. I was very badly burned and spent months recovering from the injuries. I thought that I might not be able to play the violin again. But I was lucky, my left hand had not been hurt, and when I tried to play again about six months after the accident, I realized that it was possible. That was an incredible relief, and it gave me hope and strength during that difficult time. And when I returned to playing the violin, I was more serious about it than before, because I had realized how important music is to me. But it took a long time until I had recovered enough to be able to play concerts again.”

On Surmounting Obstacles:
“Every day of running my own nonprofit is the greatest obstacle I’ve encountered, and the reality of a world torn by intractable conflict is an obstacle to the idea that music can improve the international climate for dialogue. On Breaking Down Barriers:
“I want to push the sound barrier of jazz violin. Sometimes my instrument is treated differently in jazz. String players have a hard instrument to master, while horn players can try a lot more technical things because they can advance faster. So to push the sound barrier, I want to be considered the equal of other good jazz players. That makes the music more interesting.”

I’m very lucky to have so many opportunities to do this right now with really amazing musicians.”

I have to say I am surmounting both of them in the same way: with patience and perseverance, a lot of care for each individual student, and love for this incredibly magical, unique, and yet not-easy instrument.”

*Nominated for three NAACP Image Awards
Current Projects:
*Leading a quartet jazz-fusion group
*Working on her next record that incorporates string trio into jazz combo
On Surmounting Obstacles:
“I guess [my] main obstacle is believing in my own journey. Not thinking that I have to be able to do what someone else can at a particular time, or be further along in my development than I am. It is sometimes so hard to embrace exactly where I am, and what I hear, and remember that music is not about how much you can play, how much language you know, or how many hours you've practiced . . . it’s about expressing something of value to listeners. And, the practicing is just to make my expression freer and easier. When I forget this and feel down because I cannot play or understand what someone else can, I think about the progress I’ve made, and remind myself that with time, anything I want will be in my playing if I work at it. That usually helps me overcome it.”
