As young violinists and violists grow, fractional instruments quickly come and go. In these transitional times, string teachers will see a number of abysmal chin and shoulder rest combinations. While just about every student instrument comes fitted with a stock chin rest, there’s no guarantee that the shape or size is adequate for the student’s needs. And the chin rest is only half of the equation. The chin rest must work in concert with the shoulder rest, if the young player ever hopes to find comfort.
