Summer and Early Fall Sales
Bonhams’ July 13, 2000, sale in Knightsbridge, England, brought several high bids on fine instruments and bows. A unique gold-and-tortoiseshell-mounted cello bow by W.E. Hill & Sons (81 g.) sold for £3,000 ($4,950, premium not included). The highest sale was of a French violin made by Jean Baptiste Vuillaume ca. 1869, which garnered £55,000 ($90,750). An Italian cello dating to the later quarter of the 18th century, labeled "Gia Bapt. Grancino in Contrada Largha di Milano anno 1699," sold for £8,500 ($14,025).
At the July 12 Sotheby’ sale in London, the highest bid went to an Enrico Rocca cello (c. 1912). It sold for £32,694 ($48,400, which includes buyer’s premium) and was accompanied by a certificate from Etienne Vatelot. A violin by Vincenzo Panormo, made in the style of Nicolò Amati, sold for £29,857 ($44,200); it had a certificate by W.E. Hill & Sons. An interesting Guiseppe Guadagnini violin (ca. 1780) garnered £ 28,303 ($41,900) at the Sotheby’s sale. The head was made by G.B. Guadagnini; a bow by Albert N urnberger and a certificate from Hamma & Co. accompanied the sale.
The most spectacular sale of the summer may very well have been at the Phillips June 2 auction. An "interesting violin" with no attribution sold for £81,060 ($120,000, without premium); ca. 1850, it was labeled "Johannes Baptista Guadagnini Placentinus fecit Medilano1749, L.O.B." (estimated at only £3,000–4,000).Other high sales at Phillips included a nickel-mounted violin bow, slightly orange-brown in color, carrying the stamp of L. Morizot on the shaft (lacking hair, 46 g.). This piece sold for £8,444 ($12,500). An Italian violin by Paulus Castello, Genoa, ca. 1770, sold for £24,318 ($36,000). It was described as being in good playing condition with no restoration needed.
