Time for Three Takes Orchestra Residency

For the first time in its 79-year history, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has elected an ensemble-in-residence rather than an artist or composer. Time for Three—the genre-blending group made up of violinists Zach De Pue and Nick Kendall, and double-bassist Ranaan Meyer—will take on the position for three years. The orchestra hopes the group will attract a wider audience and take part in a student mentorship program. isotf3.org


String Players to Slam Haydn’s Quartets   

String players of different ages and skill levels will take on Haydn’s 83 string quartets November 11­–15 in Iowa City, Iowa, as part of the Haydn Quartet Slam, a cooperative performance modeled after poetry slams. The Maia Quartet—quartet-in-residence at the University of Iowa—will also take part in the event, which commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Austrian composer’s death. maiaquartet.com/haydnslam 


Stradivarius International Violin Competition Set for 2010

The second Stradivarius International Violin Competition is on the books for July 5–10, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah. The competition, which was conceived by violin maker Charles W. Liu, will award the first-prize winner $7,500, a violin made by Liu, and the chance to perform with the Utah Symphony. Violinists between the ages of 11 and 17 are invited to apply by March 15, 2010. stradcompetition.org


Next Young Texas Artists Competition Announced

The 26th annual Young Texas Artists Music Competition will, again, see the best of the Lone Star State vie for prizes and performance opportunities. The competition, which will be March 11–13, 2010, is open to string players between the ages of 18 and 30 who hail from Texas or attend a Texas college, university, or conservatory. Deadline to apply is December 31. youngtexasartists.org
