Meet the Members of the ‘All Things Strings Community’ |
Scott Laird

Scott Laird is a performer and educator from Durham, North Carolina. He began playing the violin when he was six after he was inspired by an old fiddle he found during a dinner at his principal’s house. Now he’s leading the North Carolina School of Mathematics and Science Orchestra, writing tunes for a new electric violin CD project, and developing sessions for the American String Teachers Association 2010 Conference in Santa Clara, California, the Midwest Clinic band and orchestra conference, and D’Addario Bowed Strings clinics.
Laird says he enjoys being a member of the All Things Strings Community because it helps him “stay connected with friends who are string players around the country.” Check out pictures of Scott performing at his All Things Strings Community profile here. |
Ethan Alexander
Ethan Alexander is in the thick of his freshman year at University of Colorado, and has been blogging about his experience as a performance major in bass. He played piano when he was young, but switched to the bass in the sixth grade and has kept playing because he loves the sense of community created by musicians. “I know I’m never going to be the next Edgar Meyer or François Rabbath,” he says, “but I really find solace in orchestras and pits.”
Alexander joined the All Things Strings Community in March. “The other players who use it to really share and learn more about the industry have been a godsend,” he says. “I’ve discovered a lot of great players and techniques.” Follow his journey through playing in pit orchestras, preparing for auditions, and entering college here. |
Luis Claudio Manfio

Luis Claudio Manfio is a viola maker from Sao Paolo, Brazil. He is working on a 16-inch viola inspired by Andrea Guarneri. “I love making instruments,” he says, “I love having close contact with musicians, to see my instruments being played in performances and helping the careers of players.”
Manfio joined the All Things Strings community in July and has contributed helpful advice to the forums about such topics as removing varnish and purchasing new viola strings. “I like All Things Strings Community because it’s quite a new, vibrant space to discuss music and violin making,” he says, “I am particularly enjoying Jim McKean’s blog series about making a cello.”
