Columbia Composer Portraits Include Koh on SaariahoKoh

Violinist Jennifer Koh and the International Contemporary Ensemble will perform music by Kaija Saariaho on November 22 at Columbia University’s Miller Theatre. The concert will include a discussion with the composer and is part of the theater’s Composer Portraits series, which will also feature the work of Galina Ustvolskaya—who studied under Shostakovich—on November 7 and the work of American composer Ralph Shapey on November 17. millertheatre.com  


Eighth Blackbird Picks Up Win   

The Grammy Award–winning new music sextet Eighth Blackbird has been awarded the Meadows Prize by Southern Methodist University. The ensemble plans to use the prize—which includes housing and studio space for a residency in Dallas, project costs, and a stipend—to curate a new music series in partnership with the Dallas Arts District. eighthblackbird.com


Archives to Go Digital 

More than 8.5 million pages of the New York Philharmonic’s marked scores, press clippings, programs, correspondence, and business records dating back to 1842 will be digitized and placed in an online archive, thanks to a $2.4 million grant from the Leon Levy Foundation. During the first three years of the project, 1.3 million pages of material will be available to scholars, musicians, students, and the public free of charge, according to the Philharmonic. In spring 2010, Leonard Bernstein’s marked scores will be the first materials released.   


Minnesota Orchestra Picks Hicks for Pops    

The Minnesota Orchestra has appointed Sarah Hicks principal conductor of pops and presentations. Hicks, who joined the orchestra in 2006 as assistant conductor, will begin a four-year term immediately. “Being able to conduct concerts with such great variety, from Beethoven to [pop musician] Ben Folds, is my dream job,” she notes in a press release. minnesotaorchestra.org
