Kotova Premieres Cello Concerto

On September 24, Russian cellist Nina Kotova will perform the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis’ Concerto for Cello and Orchestra with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden. Kotova, interested in expanding the available repertoire for cello performance, commissioned the piece herself. “The cello as a solo instrument needs to have new works that emphasize its virtuosity, powerful energy, and lyrical impact,” she says. dallassymphony.com


Complete Brahms Symphonies Release 

Following the October 6 release on EMI Classics of their recording of the complete Brahms symphonies, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker will perform a ten-concert tour in six US cities. The concerts will feature works by Schoenberg and Wagner in addition to the Brahms symphonies. Stops include New York, Boston, Chicago, Ann Arbor, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and three of the concerts will be broadcast live online at the Philharmoniker’s Digital Concert Hall. berliner-philharmoniker.de


Morgenstern’s Musical Mandala

Violinist Gil Morgenstern will begin the third season of his Reflections Series at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City on October 18. The opening concert will promote the new exhibit Mandala: The Perfect Circle, which explores the mandala symbol used in Himalayan Buddhism. The program will include Bach, Schumann, Ysaÿe, Bartók, Barkauskas, Stravinsky, Kurtág, Crumb, Arvo Pärt, and Terry Riley. rmanyc.org/tickets


Passing: Cellist Philip Blum       

Longtime Chicago Symphony Orchestra cellist Philip Blum has died after living with lymphoma for 12 years. He was 77. He’s an alumnus of the Eastman School of Music and a former member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the US Marine Band. Blum played with the CSO for 54 years.
