Avant Gardner Launch
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston will launch Avant Gardner, a contemporary classical series that will showcase exciting works of the 20th and 21st centuries, under the direction of violist Scott Nickrenz. “It’s essential to be constantly shaking music up and taking chances with it,” Nickrenz says in a release.
The series will begin September 17 with works by Japanese composers Jo Kondo, Toru Takemitsu, and Toshio Hosokawa, performed by the Callithumpian Consort, a Boston-based new music ensemble. The series will feature world premieres of works from composers Adam Roberts, Nicholas Vines, Lei Liang, and Christian Wolff and other works by Ives, Cardew, and Cowell. gardnermuseum.org |

Sphinx Laureates at Carnegie Hall
The Sphinx Chamber Orchestra and the Harlem Quartet, both composed of alumni of the Sphinx Competition for young black and Latino string players, will include performances of works by composers of color at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium in the October 7 program. Event chair and violinist Sheila C. Johnson will also present the Sphinx Lifetime Achievement Award to singer and longtime Sphinx supporter Roberta Flack. sphinxmusic.org |

USC Thornton Anniversary Party

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music will celebrate its 125th anniversary on September 10 with the “party of the century (and a quarter),” featuring performances by school musicians including the USC Thornton Symphony, which will play Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique. “This is a momentous milestone for a storied institution,” dean of USC Thornton Rob Cutietta says in a release. “We will reflect on the school’s illustrious history, and, in the true spirit of USC Thornton, will look ahead to the next 125 years and plans to help ensure it will continue its cutting edge leadership role.” usc.edu/music |

Violinist Elmar Oliveira will hold a five-day residency this week at the University of Buffalo in New York. Competition Winner Announced
Violinist Nancy Zhou, a 16-year-old from Texas, has won first place and $10,000 in New Tang Dynasty Television’s second Chinese International Violin Competition. “I wasn’t really expecting any prize for me because I was just there for the experience,” Zhou told NTDTV. |
