Gut Strings: What you Need to Know

A Different Setup Approach

AllThingsStrings.comThe most important difference between gut and other types of strings is sound. Gut strings have a depth of tone, complexity, and richness of overtones that invites more subtle and nuanced styles of playing. Additionally, they have lower tension than steel or synthetic strings and can be more comfortable to play because they are more pliable under your fingers. Gut strings have a slower bow response and require a lower bow pressure. Also, many old instruments (especially those from the 17th and 18th centuries) were built to be played with gut strings and seem to “open up” under the lower tension. Cellist and Juilliard faculty member Bonnie Hampton once described her old Italian cello as “happier” when she installs gut strings.
