Arranged for a beginning string group, “Amazing Grace” and “Simple Gifts” are easy-to-play folk hymns recommended for school programs, worship services, and recitals. This textured arrangement of “Amazing Grace” features four variations. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has recorded “Simple Gifts,” which has become part of the classical music tradition, and he performed the tune with violinist Itzhak Perlman and others at President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

Make Practice More Fun
If you find yourself getting bored with the music you’re playing, it’s a sure sign that you need to add some feeling. Assess the mood, imagine a story line, and then find ways to make your rendition of the music tell the story.

’80s Pop Songs for String Quartet
Jump back to the ’80s with Modern English’s timeless smash hit “I Melt with You” and Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” These quintessential ’80s pop songs inspire feelings of love and romance, and are sure to be crowd-pleasers, no matter where they’re performed.

The Importance of Listening
It is very important to be able to listen, whether you are playing or not. The second violin is not that difficult—you can play the notes—but you have to be able to listen to the different parts, including your own, all the time.

Develop a Natural Bow Hold
As the foundation of your bow technique—literally how you and your bow connect—your bow hold can either support your technique or hinder it.
