Appalachian Folk Tunes for String Orchestra

Strings Week
Instruction, Information & Inspiration for Players of Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass & Fiddle | Seeptember 16, 2011

Appalachian Folk Tunes for String Orchestra

Improvise with these traditional tunes arranged for string orchestra. They’re perfect for a more seasoned ensemble. “Consternation/Devil in the Strawstack”—which combines a traditional melody with a new jazzy countermelody—gives an old fiddle tune a “new grass” flavor. “Dusty River” combines two classic Appalachian tunes—“Dry and Dusty” and “Duck River”—into an engaging piece packed with challenging string crossings. They’re ideal for learning and performance. Add them to your student group’s set list in time for your next concert.

Mark Wood’s Rock-Violin Mission
At each stop on his Electrify Your Strings! tour, Mark Wood usually spends two days (though he sometimes stays for longer residencies) introducing his electric instruments and his pedagogy, which includes a heavy emphasis on improvisation and self-expression.

How to Maintain a Healthy Quartet Relationship
The chamber ensemble provides string players with the unique opportunity to experience music on a highly intimate level. But it’s a lot of work. In most cases, you’ll need to know your own musical part, be aware of your counterparts, work together with your mates to run the business of your ensemble, find repertoire that resonates with everyone, and perform with perfect balance, intonation, and uniformity.

Be a Better Chamber Player—Blending
Any string player with professional performance aspirations knows that there are five basic, yet essential, skills to master before stepping onstage. First: you must have established your own expressive tone. Second: a solid technique is critical.

Jorja Fleezanis on Emoting
If a person is uptight, physically in knots, they’re just not going to be able to get it out. It’s internal. They can move the shoulder, do this, do that, but if they’re still playing like a clam, I say, “Sing it out! Vocalize from the gut.”
