Mind Your Varnish When Mailing Your Cello

Mind Your Varnish When Mailing Your Cello

Surprisingly, varnish is one of the most important considerations when packing instruments. If the varnish is very fragile or not quite cured or hardened all the way, you can still ship it safely by taking extra precautions. The guideline is to not put anything on the instrument that will touch the varnish. Satin or silk bags are okay only if the varnish is cured enough. Often instruments will be shipped in older cases, some of which are lined in fabric with long hairs that can wreak havoc on varnish.

This week from Strings Daily…

The Art of Solo Violin
If you are a fan of the violin, there is something incredibly satisfying in just listening to the instrument, and for a violinist, playing unaccompanied allows them to explore the utmost limits of what a violin can do.

Get Your Audience Swinging
Turn your orchestra into a big band for the night with Duke Ellington’s swing classics. The loping bass line, the sinewy horn parts, and the intricate harmonies of “Echoes of Harlem” are translated into an artful arrangement for string orchestra.

Advice on Playing and Listening
Never play outside yourself, always draw from within. You have to be able to understand everything that’s going on in the music you’re playing; read as much as you can about it.

Coldplay and the Shins for String Quartet
“New Slang” by the Shins captures the vibe of ’60s folk music with a simple earnestness matched only by its infectiousness. In the original, a quiet, campfire-style acoustic guitar supports the haunting melody, so try performing this string arrangement with a super-relaxed feel.
