How to Tighten Your Bow

Strings Week
Instruction, Information & Inspiration for Players of Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass & Fiddle | June 24, 2011

How to Tighten Your Bow

The hair on your bow must be tightened before use and loosened each time you finish playing. In fact, get in the habit of loosening it whenever you take a break from playing. Be sure to put it safely in the case when you are not using it. That’s the safest place for your fragile bow.

  • Don’t touch the hair with your hands.
  • Hold the bow in your left hand, thumb across the pearl slide.
  • Turn the octagonal button on the end until the hair is tight enough but not too tight.

“Tight enough” will look slightly different on every bow. You will soon learn what “right” feels like, but for starters there should be enough space between hair and bow that the stick doesn’t touch the hair while you play, but not so tight that the stick loses its curve and looks straight. That’s too tight.

  • Loosen the hair until it just starts to flop, then tighten it one turn of the button. This will keep the hair even but let the bow relax.

Do I Need a Different Bow for Camp?
“So many teachers think that carbon fiber will fare better in the summer,” bow maker Elizabeth Vander Veer Shaak says. “It’s so humid in the East.” Humidity can have a dramatic effect on the hair, “But what material your bow is made of will have no effect on how it fares in the weather,” she adds.

How to Make Violin Lessons Fun for Kids
Play your violin during an after-school activity that’s unrelated to weekly lessons. That’s what ten-year-old Chicagoan Sasha Simon did. He tried out for his school play and earned a small part, but when the show’s director heard that Sasha plays violin, he was asked to perform three fiddle songs onstage. It was a perfect fit, since the play had a country/western theme.
