What to Look for in a Contemporary Violin
Sound quality is still the major factor in choosing an instrument, new or old. So a little preparation is necessary in order to learn what sound you like best. Before you spend time and money looking for the right violin, play every instrument you can get your hands on, borrowing them from friends, teachers, and stand partners. Play each one at length—for hours, not minutes. This is very good for opening your eyes and ears, and it will help you develop your opinion of what good sound is and what suits you best.

Tascam LR-10 Fills a Niche for Fiddlers
For the last few years, Tascam has offered a really useful and popular trainer/recorder for electric guitar and bass, the GB-10. However, while fitted with enviable features that might benefit any practicing musician, it lacked a microphone to record acoustic instruments like your fiddle. Tascam heeded the call and introduced a mic’d version, the Tascam LR-10 Instrumental Trainer/Recorder at this winter’s NAMM show in Anaheim.

Protect Your Cello from Temperature Changes
Even if you use a humidification system in your instrument case, you should take additional steps to protect your instrument:

Solace, a Mexican Serenade and Bethena, a Concert Waltz: Scott Joplin Classics for String Quartet
Upbeat tunes such as “The Entertainer” made Scott Joplin an immortal name in ragtime music, and his engaging Mexican serenade and playful waltzes are equally compelling. Originally arranged for violin, viola, and cello, “Solace, a Mexican Serenade” and “Bethena, a Concert Waltz” offer a fresh perspective on Joplin’s work, when arranged for string quartet, and let you hear the celebrated composer in an exciting new way.

Carnegie Hall Celebrates 120 Years

The Phil also will perform Dvorak’s Carnival Overture and Gershwin’s An American in Paris (which originally premiered at the hall in 1928), among other works. The concert will be aired on Classical 105.9 FM WQXR in New York and streamed online at wqxr.org. On May 31, it will be broadcast on PBS’s Great Performances program. carnegiehall.org/Support/Gala-Events
