Punch Up Your Set List with These Pop Hits from Strings Charts

Coldplay was not yet a household name in 2000 when the British pop band released “Yellow,” but once this catchy tune hit the airwaves (and the video music channels) the band was on its way to becoming one of the biggest acts in the world. Because the straightforward groove of the band’s original version could have been bland with just the string quartet, this arrangement changes the feel with a rhythmic cello part, which is much more active than the bass part in Coldplay’s version. “New Slang” by the Shins captures the vibe of ’60s folk music with a simple earnestness matched only by its infectiousness. In the original, a quiet, campfire-style acoustic guitar supports the haunting melody, so try performing this string arrangement with a super-relaxed feel.

Add both of these popular tunes to your  repertoire when you order New Slang (by the Shins) and Yellow (by  Coldplay): Pop Hits for String Quartet. Your ensemble will thank you for jazzing up your shared performance  program. Order the full scores and parts to both pieces in this combined sheet music pack today!

This week from Strings Daily…

How to Weatherize a Cello
Ideally, a stringed instrument should be kept in a moderate environment of about 60–70°F with 50 percent humidity. A few are fortunate enough to live in a region with these constant conditions, but most of us do not. If you live in the American Southwest, for example, where it’s hot and dry a good deal of the time, you need to take extra measures to stabilize the conditions inside the instrument case.

Beginning String Orchestras Will Shine with These Simple Folk Hymns
Arranged for a beginning string group, these easy-to-play folk hymns are recommended for school programs, worship services, and recitals. This textured arrangement of “Amazing Grace” features four variations. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has recorded “Simple Gifts,” a folk hymn that has become part of the classical-music tradition, and he performed the tune with violinist Itzhak Perlman and others at President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

End the Old Nag-and-Whine Routine for Good
Of course we have to do something to make sure our children practice. If we say nothing, they may not practice at all! So we face this age-old bind. Short of letting our kids take music lessons without making a commitment to working between lessons, what can we do to motivate them to practice more? Help make practice more fun and meaningful for your child by getting involved. A parent’s role in a practice session must be one of positive, total engagement.
