World of Warcraft: Instrumental Solos for Violin.

Arranged by Bill Galliford, Ethan Neuburg, and Tod Edmondson. Alfred Publishing, $16.99.

IP_Warcraft

Looking to spice up your violin playing with some trolls, wizards, and dragons? Or maybe you’re looking for a way to engage your students looking for relevant modern works?

This collection of violin solos from the soundtrack to popular multi-player computer game World of Warcraft includes ten songs that are fun and catchy, even for students who have never set (virtual) foot in the Warcraft universe. The violin part is easily playable by a middle or high school student. All notes fit within first position, and key signatures are never harder than A major.

However, the level of difficulty does vary between tunes. For example, “Pig and Whistle” is a simple, repetitive jig playable by younger students. “Wrath of the Lich King” is quite rhythmically challenging, with sections in a quick 7/4 that are more difficult to put together with the piano part.

The package contains a solo violin part, piano accompaniment score, and CD with both play-along and demo tracks.

The violin part has measure numbers and bowings, but no fingerings. The piano accompaniment includes chord markings.

Although the companion CD is labeled “T Sax” when opened on a computer, it does fit with the violin book, and includes a somewhat cheesy MIDI-sounding violin.

The beginning and end of the piano part has color World of Warcraft illustrations, for those in need of a little extra inspiration.
