Cole Porter’s 1934 Depression-era Broadway musical Anything Goes—which starred Ethel Merman, Victor Moore, and William Gaxton—introduced songs that have since become popular standards: “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “Blow Gabriel Blow,” and, of course, “Anything Goes.” The show was the fourth-longest running on Broadway in the 1930s, and spawned a 1936 screen version, starring Bing Crosby and Ethel Merman, and a 1987 revival, starring Patti LuPone.
