Julia Fischer Pays Homage to Paganini, the First Romantic Composer
The German virtuoso explains her musical approach to the technical challenges of Paganini's 24 Caprices, Op. 1
Nicolò Paganini’s 24 caprices strike fear in the heart of many violinists because the famous collection demands the utmost in technique and musicality of the soloist. Few violinists dare claim mastery of all of the caprices—long regarded as mere études meant for study purposes only—and fewer yet dare play all of them in concert or record their efforts for posterity. One brave soul who recently ventured into this hazardous territory is the German violinist Julia Fischer, whose CD Paganini: 24 Caprices was released on Universal/Decca in September.
