Reviving One of the UK’s Great Lost Cello Concertos
The Stanford Concerto is reborn in an upcoming critical edition
Last year, I was invited by Hyperion Records to contribute to its Romantic Cello Concerto Series. I discovered that Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, the great Anglo-Irish composer, had written a cello concerto in 1879-1880. It seems that this work followed soon after Stanford’s training in Germany and his thorough immersion in German musical culture. Interestingly, this piece represents the only existing cello concerto from the late 19th century by an important British composer.
