Treasure Trove of French Music for the Creative Violinist

This Saint-Saens Romantic work has stood the test of time

Although it is difficult to choose a favorite composer or composition, there is a special place in my heart for Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, Op. 28, in A minor, by the great French romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. This wonderful piece was made possible by a friendship that began in 1859, when the then-15-year-old celebrated Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate approached Saint-Saëns and commissioned a violin concerto (that piece became Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 1 in A major). Four years later, Saint-Saëns wrote yet another solo orchestral work for
Sarasate, which premiered in Paris on April 4, 1867. That composition was the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso—it was dedicated to Sarasate.
