Introducing the Musical Instrument Museums Online (MIMO)
A new online database of musical instruments housed in European museums
Thanks to the European Union, the musical-instrument collections of 11 of Europe’s finest museums are now viewable online.
You can choose from the more elegant and user-friendly Europeana website, which contains several virtual exhibits, including one of Stradivari’s instruments, and another of experimental instruments, including Vuillaume’s giant Octobass and the extremely stretched body of the violino-harpa made by Viennese luthier Thomas Zach in 1873. Or, if you want to go deep into the more scholarly side, the Musical Instrument Museums Online (MIMO) database searches the entire collection of 45,000 instrument images, 1,800 digital audio files, and 300 video clips. Here you’ll find over 1,400 violins, nearly 300 cellos, and hundreds more bowed stringed instruments.
It’s a magnificent resource for research and entertainment. For details, visit europeana.eu and mimo-db.eu.
