2011 Winter Auction Results
The December 8 sale held at Vichy Enchères auction house in Vichy, France, brought €80,548 for an Auguste Sébastien Phillipe Bernadel cello made in Paris in 1848. Bernadel had a reputation for building cellos of excellent quality, which William Henley claims “rank with the best in France” in his Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers. The Vichy auction also set records for several bows, including a €28,500 violin bow made by François Eury, a François Lupot II violin bow for €29,121, and €30,980 for a cello bow by Pierre Simon, who was Dominique Peccatte’s successor at Vuillaume’s shop.
Notable results from Brompton’s lower-key December 12 sale include a ca. 1900 violin made in Turin, Italy, by Annibale Fagnola, which went for €55,200, and a Giovanni Rota violin approximately 100 years older that found a buyer for €31,200.
