Sometimes it seems as though in every attic in America there is a violin waiting to be discovered. In Europe I would expect there to be two; and in the average castle, even three or four. The inevitable discovery (usually the consequence of settling an estate) almost always leads to difficulties, because it is a rare family that doesn’t think that somewhere in their late relative’s attic is a work of art or heirloom that will make the appraiser from Christie’s faint on seeing it.
