While the debate may forever rage over the merits of antique violins vs. newly made fiddles, a recent listening test offers compelling evidence that there may be a gap between the mystique of violins from Stradivari and Guarneri and our preferences for tonal superiority. Recent reports of a blindfold test that asked 21 players to distinguish the difference between a del Gesù and two Strad violins and a host of contemporary fiddles were misleading, if not outright exaggeration, in concluding that the players couldn’t tell a Strad from a new violin.
