How to Teach a Gifted String Student

Be prepared to deal with ambition, pushy parents, and those who see the gifted young violinist as a laboratory specimen

It can happen to any violin teacher: into your studio walks a student who astonishes you. You see and hear leaps in musical understanding and technical skill from week to week. Assign her part of a movement and she comes back with the whole thing memorized. Work through a technical exercise at the lesson and it sticks.

You’ve got a highly gifted string student on your hands.

Teaching isn’t a one-size-fits-all business and working with a gifted string student isn’t the same as teaching one who’s merely “good” or “quite talented.” You’re bound to encounter matters ranging from challenging pedagogical issues to overly ambitious stage moms.
