How to Help Train the Ear
Teach a student to develop reasoning skills that can help solve music's complexities
Music fills the mind with many paradoxes and puzzles, and one of the greater mysteries that challenges teachers is how to set up a beginner. While each teacher's philosophy is unique, all would agree that both the left and the right hand should have good form and act inter-dependently. Even if you follow the clear steps set out in any method book, the outcome depends on the student's practice habits, parental support, and natural ability. Just as every musician expresses music differently, no two children will learn it in the same way. Choosing materials from several different methods keeps a teacher fresh as he adjusts to the student's work style and personality.
