Crowdfunding sites attract donors big and small to pay for underfinanced projects
As traditional arts funding dwindles and musicians turn to crowdfunding—or raising small amounts of money from multiple donors—to raise funds for everything from recording projects and music videos to instruments and competition fees. A variety of websites—including IndieGoGo, Kickstarter, GoFundMe, ArtistShare, DonorsChoose, and others—are providing a means for musicians to raise money.
Of the more than 9,500 Kickstarter projects that have successfully reached their funding goal, nearly 3,000 are in the music category, Kickstarter spokesman Justin Kazmark says.
According to Erica Labovitz, IndieGoGo’s director of marketing, overall music projects—and the contributions given to those projects—have increased significantly in the past few months.
