Pirastro Passione Bass Strings
Pirastro’s newest addition to the Passione line is a set of steel-core orchestral bass strings in two gauges—“orchestra” and “orchestra stark”—aimed at the classical arco player. Our reviewers—a bass maker and an orchestral bassist—found that the regular orchestra strings stabilize quickly and speak more easily than other bass strings from Pirastro.

The arco sound was warm and flexible: “Good classical strings,” the bass player concluded, “but not quite edgy enough for solo.” For more brilliance, try the higher-tension “stark” version.
Though the Passione strings may not appeal to a jazz player, the reviewers agreed the strings had “a very nice classical pizz sound, just what composers usually want when they write pizz.”
