Tascam LR-10 Instrumental Trainer/Recorder

NP_Tascam

For the last few years, Tascam has offered a really useful and popular trainer/recorder for electric guitar and bass, the GB-10. However, while fitted with enviable features that might benefit any practicing musician, it lacked a microphone to record acoustic instruments like your fiddle. Tascam heeded the call and introduced a mic’d version, the Tascam LR-10 Instrumental Trainer/Recorder at this winter’s NAMM show in Anaheim.

So, what makes these gadgets so useful?

Further Resources

• Onboard speaker and stereo mics
• Adjustable playback speed
• Metronome and tuner
• CD-quality recordings
• Over 3 hours of recording time
• $239 (MSRP), $179 (street)
tascam.com

With the included 2 GB SD/SDHC card, you can record over three hours of a practice session at the conservatory or a seisún at the pub. The LR-10 records in WAV format at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit format, which in English means, “CD-quality sound.” You can also import MP3 or WAV files from your computer for playback at reduced speed (without changing pitch) to help you better hear the nuances and challenges of your favorite Dvor?ák string quartet recording. Additionally, you can loop selected passages for playback or overdub recordings for a duet with yourself or, if you dare, Rostropovich.

About the size of a TV remote, the Tascam is compact enough to fit in your instrument case and rugged enough to survive a fall from a desk. (Ask me how I know.) And interfacing with the layout is easy enough that even the technology averse can begin using the LR-10. The LR-10 is a helpful tool on your path to musical enlightenment and one that can add layers of fun to the trip.
