The Lacey Act may complicate things for luthiers
The revival and amendment of a century-old law is stirring political and economic dissent and leaving many instrument and bow makers, and musicians, worried about the fate of stockpiles of valuable wood and the possibility of precious instruments and bows being confiscated by US Fish & Game officials who enforce the endangered species act.
The concerns grew out of a recent raid by federal agents on the Gibson’s guitar-making factories in Memphis and Nashville, including the seizure of allegedly nonconforming Indian rosewood and ebony, which is sending shock waves throughout the lutherie trade.
