Americans Top 2011 Concours de lutherie Etienne Vatelot Awards
For first time, US bow makers have taken top honors in the prestigious French competition
“The state of contemporary bow making is really fabulous and I’m so glad to have seen it blossom as it has,” says Morgan Andersen, whose violin bow took first place at the 2011 Concours de lutherie Etienne Vatelot in Paris, France. Fellow American Matt Wehling also placed highly at the show, earning first place for his cello bow and second place for his violin bow.
Though the competition includes instruments and bows, it’s fitting that in the birthplace of the modern bow the bow portion of the competition carries the most cachet for the winners. Held only four times (in 1991, 1999, 2004, and 2011), the internationally prestigious Étienne Vatelot Violin Making Competition has boosted the careers of several bow and violin makers.
